Literature review

From the existing literature it has been witnessed that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy [CBT] refers to an effective approach that is widely used for mental health complexities such as depression and anxiety. As said by Buza et al, (2021) CBT is well supported for treating depressive and anxiety disorders, trials of CBT have been undertaken and after multiple evidence-based research it was recognised as an evidence-based practice which could be used within clinical practice. Mulkens, and Waller (2021) elucidated that Depression and anxiety found to be positively correlated with stress and due to this, consistent negative thoughts develop in patient’s mind which result in depression and anxiety. Counsellors and therapist prefer CBT for analysing the root cause of their mental health complexity. For instance- if an individual has depression due to traumatic event, then counsellor focuses on empowering patient by increasing acceptance level so they can move ahead in their life.

However, Prasko et al, (2022) stated that CBT only focuses on shaping the thoughts and behavioural pattern of individuals and it lacks in understanding human experience. Specific pattern has been followed in this therapy that often ignores diverse understanding regarding experiences. Heidenreich et al, (2021) stated that counsellor adopts patient-centre care while using CBT and consequently, patients need has been put at the forefront. CBT enhances self-esteem of individuals and reduces depression and anxiety levels. Thus, CBT proves to be highly important tackling mental health complexities such as depression and anxiety.

Findings and analysis

Theme 1- Importance of CBT in tackling depression and anxiety

The study of Shortis, Warrington and Whittaker (2020) depicted that CBT proves to be an effective treatment for antenatal depression; it supports in the management of negative thoughts and induces positive thoughts within patients. Pregnant women suffer from depression and this can drastically influence their health. In such situation, CBT is recommended for them as it helps with self-acceptance and further enhances resilience capabilities in patients. Whereas, Ólason et al, (2018) study focused on assessing the efficacy of CBT for depression and anxiety in rehabilitation pain management program. Depression and anxiety can occur due to varied reasons however, CBT supports with all kind of issues leading to mental complexity. The study signified that CBT helps with long-term benefits and proves to be effective in pain management. Prior focus has been implied on increasing the acceptance abilities of individuals and positive behaviour is encouraged through patient empowerment.

Bogucki et al, (2021) research revealed that individuals suffering from depressive order requires additional support; evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy enables patient to identify their own interest and hobbies. CBT aims to guide people that they can control their feelings, behaviours and thoughts. In case of depression and anxiety, individual gets benefit from CBT as they are encouraged to shape their negative thoughts. Study has revealed that participants who were suffering from moderate to severe depression and anxiety shown the reduction in depressive symptoms after consistent session of CBT. Three of the studies has shown one thing in common which depicts that CBT led to reduce depression and anxiety in individuals. However, reason associated with mental health complexities in three of the studies were different but the common factor was depression and anxiety and these was improved through implication of CBT.

Theme 2- Understanding role of CBT in different cases

Warrington and Whittaker (2020) revealed significant insights regarding role of CBT; pregnant women face depression due to hormonal changes. CBT enables them to accept these changes and further enhances their self-esteem and reduces negative feelings. Ólason et al, (2018) depicted that chronic pain in individuals’ body can lead to create higher anxiety and depression in them. Patient empowerment is essential domain as it comprised with increasing the strength and resilience of patient. The chronic pain management in patient has been undertaken through implying CBT and accordingly, resilience capabilities in patient is enhanced to greater note. Thus, role of CBT in chronic pain management comprehends with patient empowerment. Bogucki et al, (2021) revealed that depressive disorder impacts mental well-being of individuals in drastic manner, CBT supports patients with depressive disorder via increasing self-acceptance ability in them. Individuals become able to accept the changes in their lives and further self-esteem ability enhanced to greater extent.

Hence, this can be said that role of CBT complies with varied factors in different cases. The main motive is to improve mental well-being of patients and enhancing their resilience and self-acceptance capabilities while shaping their thoughts and perceptions.

Recommendations

Based on the analysis the major recommendations are-

Understanding different experience of patient

It is essential to understand the unique experience of patient and accordingly, strategies should be implied. CBT focuses on shaping thoughts and behaviour of patient; however, it is equally important to understand human experience aligns with trauma or any event (Mellor et al, 2022). By focusing on diverse human experience an effective understanding can be developed regarding the major issues leading to mental health complexities.

Emphasising on patient involvement

The focus must be implied on increasing patient involvement by gaining their attention and developing a non-judgemental environment. This results in enhancing sense of belongingness in patient and further increases their involvement within therapy procedure (Mellor et al, 2022). Therefore, it is essential to imply significant focus on this area so that patient involvement can be enhanced to greater note and effective outcomes could be gained.

PART 2 - REFLECTIVE ACCOUNT

Reflection refers to that piece of academic writing that enables student in terms of evaluating own strengths and weaknesses. It plays pivotal role in identifying areas of improvement and accordingly, further actions could be taken (Sahasrabudhe, 2022). The present part will be based on writing self-reflection and consequently, I will mention about those skills which has been developed during this module and further I am going to highlight the areas of improvement. In order to perform reflection, I will be using Gibb’s reflective model; this proves to be one of the effectual models of reflection comprised with six stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan.

Moving ahead with the description of experience, this module has provided me significant opportunities in relation to enhance own learning and skills. I have been given the opportunity to work in group, we were five members in the team and I was the leader. This was one of the most challenging experiences for me, at initial stage varied issues have been faced by me due to not able to manage time and lack of presentation skill. I was not able to reflect on my opinions and this led to develop significant issues for me. This results in creating lack of interaction with the team members. I was very nervous and I shared everything with my tutor which led to change my perception, based on tutor guidance I have started open communication with group members where everyone can share their opinions and points for taking appropriate decisions. This open discussion led to develop sense of belongingness in team members and further encouraged me to present my thoughts, in the role of team leader I have learned to presentation skill. By the time I have improved it. However, still I am not able to manage time while undertaking any new task and therefore, I will imply signify focus on this area so that I can improve this skill.

During this module I have learned to use excel for allocating data, budgeting, programming and so on domains. I can say that I have developed excel related skills which are important in future as well. This results in adding efficacy in my professional development, furthermore, I have learned and developed varied academic skills such as writing and referencing skills. At the beginning I was lacking in formal writing and this resulted in impacting marks within assignment and further, my tutor told me that this can result in influencing final marks as well. Therefore, I started practicing in this context and I emphasised on proofreading own work which led to reduce errors within assignment. Furthermore, I approached authentic sources for writing assignments and this resulted in enhancing writing skills, I have assured that no plagiarism has been done appropriate paraphrasing was undertaken. Moreover, references and citations were done while following the guide, I have consistently practiced in this context and I was able to enhance academic skills.

This experience boosted my confidence to greater utmost which led to positive feelings in me. However, there was certain time when I was not able to understand varied things which resulted in negative feelings. In context of time management, I am not confident enough as I am not able to complete the tasks on given time and this resulted in creating major issues for me. Therefore, my core motive is to focus on this area so that I can effectively able to complete my tasks on given time. Other skills which have been developed in me during this module associates with communication skill. This proves to be one of the foremost skills that supports an individual in terms of listening and speaking Cottrell, (2024). In groups discussions I have presented my thoughts and I was able to communicate my opinions which developed speaking abilities in me. Also, I have listened to the opinion of other people without making any kind of judgement and this supported me in developing listening abilities. Hence, in this manner, I was able to develop speaking and listening abilities.

I will use this skill in future at my workplace for developing effective interaction with patients and my colleagues. This supports in developing a bond with all people and contributes gaining effective outcomes. Hence, there is no doubt in stating that this module has provided me opportunity regarding enhancing own communication skill. However, I am lacking in problem solving skill due to lack of resilience capabilities and this impacts my working abilities. I need to develop resilience abilities in me so that I cannot get stressed out during problematic situations. By focusing on this area, I can enhance own problem solving and resilience potential and this support me in future at the workplace and therefore, I am going to develop consistent focus on this area. Digital skills are important for scholars as this supports them in using technological tools in effective manner for performing their task (Kwiatkowska and Wiśniewska-Nogaj, 2022). This contributes in enhancing productivity, professional resilience and creativity.

I have improved own digital skills through this module; I have completed my assignment while using online platform and accordingly, I have searched for different articles for completing the assignment. Furthermore, I have made PowerPoint presentations and posters that enabled me to use different digital tools for completing the assignments. Hence, I can say that I have become able to learn about the ways in which digital platform could be used for completing the tasks. This skill will support me in future at the workplace as I would be able to use digital platform for completing the task (Burns and Sinfield, 2022). Thus, there is no doubt in stating that this module has provided me effectual opportunities in terms of developing important skills which are adding in my personal and professional development. I will use these skills in future so that I can effectively perform my tasks at the workplace.

However, during this experience I have realised that I am not able to take decision which states that I am lacking in decision making skill. Ineffective decision-making skills can result in impacting outcomes in drastic manner and therefore, I need to create focus on this area. From the reflection I have analysed certain areas of improvement which associates with time management, problem solving, resilience capabilities and decision-making skills. These are the context on-to which focus in needed. Below mentioned is an action plan that supports in improving all of these skills.

Table 1-Action Plan

Skills Importance How to improve? Measure
Time management This skill proves to be highly important for me as it helps in the completion of task on time. I am going to improve this skill by setting specific time for a task. Afterwards, I will divide my whole task into different activities and for each of the activity I will further set time. This guides me in terms of completing my task on time and further helps in managing time. This skill would be measured through checking whether the task has been completed on set time or not.
Problem solving This skill is essential for solving the complexities arising during tasks. This ability supports in undertaking appropriate solutions of the problem and reduces the drastic impact on final outcomes. In order to improve this skill, my core motive would be on analysing the root cause of issue. This helps in assessing actual reason behind the problem and consequently, decision could be taken. I will measure this skill through situational judgement tests and this often supports in assessing reasoning.
Resilience capability This ability is essential for managing stress in any kind of uncertainty. I will develop resilience capabilities in me through practicing mindfulness. This supports in keeping a positive attitude in emergency situations. I will measure this skill through comparing the state of present and future state of own
Decision-making This skill is essential for taking appropriate decision that can lead to provide positive outcomes. For improving this skill, I will focus on critically analysing different alternatives and accordingly, most appropriate decision will be considered. This skill will be measured through assessing the efficacy of outcomes gained after implementation of decision.

Thus, above mentioned skills are the topmost abilities that are needed to be improved and I will follow this action plan so that I can effectively gain these skills. This will enable me to gain professional and personal development. Henceforth, my motive would be aligned with enhancing own practices and activities in academic context so that I can become able in terms of enhancing own performance. Thus, I can say that this module has provided me significant opportunities in terms of developing certain skills [Communication, digital, presentation, writing, referencing and so on] in me and I will consistently focus on all of these skills and further use it at my workplace. In this manner, I would be able to gain personal and professional development.
