1. Introduction

This reflective report aims to highlight the experiences, knowledge and insights I have gained through the module coursework for weeks 4, 5, and 6. Week 4 of the learning module has included the topic: personal development, improving self-awareness and developing personal development planning (PDP). From this module, the concept I have learned is that personal development is an important and transformative process which can empower any individual when it comes to enhancing personal and professional skills, self-awareness and strategically planning career growth. On the other hand, Week 5 has helped to develop ideas about reflection and reflective thinking, whereas Week 6 concentrated on emotional intelligence. To develop the reflective report, Kolb's reflective model has been used. Through Kolb's Reflective cycle, I can highlight my experiences, and learning insights through a structured framework and implement changes which foster continuous personal and professional growth throughout my educational career. Through these learning sessions, I have been equipped with theoretical knowledge and tools to introspect, set clear and well-defined goals, and devise actionable and achievable plans for sustained development in personal and professional livelihood.

The rationale for choosing Kolb's Reflective model for this proposed reflective report is that this experiential learning framework emphasises learning through experience and involves a stage-cycle that can support effective learning practice.

I. Concrete experience

In the week 4 learning module, we were asked to concentrate on personal development plans and the importance of self-awareness in developing personal development plans. During this course work, I got opportunities to be deeply engaged with the concepts of ‘personal development' how to improve self-awareness and how to design a personal development plan for facilitating continuous growth and improvement in learning practice. One particular impactful experience that I have gained during this week 4 learning coursework was completing my self-awareness exercise that involved the task of talking to ownself and recording that on a voice recorder. In this coursework, I was asked to focus on the first social barrier that inhibited my improvement or growth and how I overcame that challenge. The purpose of this activity was to practice how to develop self-awareness. Intially, I felt unfamiliar, as talking to ownself and recording that was quite odd. I was uncomfortable too as it needed a high level of introspection and honesty. However, over time I learned about how to develop self-awareness, and what skills do one needs to acquire to develop self-awareness which helped me to identify my behavioural pattern and develop awareness for ownself, which might help me in future career growth.

Another significant insight I have gained during the week 5 coursework was the importance of self-awareness by concentrating on past actions and experiences and focusing on what went well, and how that challenge can be overcome to ensure future success. In this week 4 learning session, I crafted a comprehensive PDP that outlines my short-term and long-term personal and professional goals. As a whole, from weeks 4 and 5 of learning coursework, I have developed my experiences on personal development in fostering self-awareness and self-reflection.

II. Reflective observation

Reflecting on my experiences from week 4, and 5 learning sessions, I have gained a clear understanding of the integral concepts of personal development, personal development plan, reflective thinking and self-awareness. The task of developing self-awareness through reflective thinking, where I was asked to record my own thoughts about the first social barrier I encountered in my life and how to overcome that, has helped me to realise how crucial self-awareness is in identifying my strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement (Nasur, Ahad and Gul, 2024). Initially documenting my thoughts and reactions or emotions seemed to be tedious, but soon I realised that the whole course work is invaluable in uncovering the subconscious pattern in my thoughts and behaviour about social circumstances.

Reflecting on the Week 4 learning session, I have gained a deeper understanding of the PDP in terms of how structured planning can transform abstract aspirations into concrete goals. In this learning session, I have learned about the importance of personal development. I came to know that a lifelong personal development process can help me to improve my capacity to take responsibility for my learning (Supkhanovna, 2024). It helped me to be effective, independent, and confident as a self-directed learners and guided me to improve my general skills for study and career management. During the learning session of week 5, I came to realise that reflective thinking is an essential part of self-awareness, specifically when it comes to personal development planning. Reflective thinking can facilitate one's deeper understanding and insight into one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviours (Clarke, 2024). Engaging myself in reflective thinking can allow me to critically analyse the experiences that I have gained from specific situations, identification of my pattern of thinking and recognize the areas for development, which facilitate me to develop concrete goals for future development. In connecting the learning experiences that I earned from week 5 and week 6 learning sessions, it can be stated that reflective thinking is important for developing emotional intelligence, as it promotes empathy and understanding of how one's action can affect others.

In summary, the experiences that I have gained through the week 4 learning session can help me shape my understanding of personal development. This session has underscored the importance of continuous self-reflection, setting up clear and achievable goals and being aware to develop an impactful behavioural approach, which can further help me in career development in any industry.

III. Abstract conceptualization

The Week 4 module on personal development offered a comprehensive understanding of the process and principles underpinning self-improvement, emphasizing self-awareness and personal development planning or PDP. During the week 4 learning session, I came to understand that personal development is a process of assessing own strengths, and weaknesses and identification of areas of development, which can guide one to meet the professional goal across the social, psychological, and emotional domains. During the course work, I was asked to concentrate on the definition given by Rogers, in 1961 about personal development, which made me realise that personal development is a lifelong process which is essential for developing self-awareness, and fostering better relationships with others (Stoliarchuk et al., 2024). Therefore, from the definition, I can state that personal development can enable me or any individual to make informed decisions for change in personal and professional livelihood.

The second key learning concept that I learned in the week 4 and 5 sessions was based on self-awareness through reflective thinking. This module made me realise that self-awareness is a core element of personal development, which includes the process of understanding own feelings, attitude, cognitive behavioural approach, and values and recognising the impact of own behaviour on others. In this week 4 learning session, we have learned about the definition given by Jung (1961) on self-awareness, where the author mentioned ‘unless you bring your unconscious thoughts and desires into your conscious awareness, they will continue to influence your life and you may perceive their effects as inevitable destiny' (Kohn, 2024). This definition or explanation underscored the idea that self-awareness is essential to take good control of one's life and decision-making or making deliberate choices. In the week 4 module, I have learned about several methods which are important to develop self-awareness, which include maintaining a reflective journal, meditating, taking psychometric tests, and setting rationale and achievable priorities. Similarly, from week 6, I have learned about several techniques to develop and strengthen emotional intelligence. From week 6, I came to realise that self-awareness and reflective thinking are some of the best-fit strategies to develop EQ, where mindfulness and meditation can help me to enhance moment-to-moment awareness of my own emotions, reduce stress and promote emotional regulation. Additionally from this week, I have learned about how feedback-seeking attributes can help me to develop my EQ- as constructive criticism is considered to be effective in highlighting areas for improvement and reinforcing positive behaviour (Kurian et al., 2024). These practices can help an individual to become more conscious about their behaviour and actions and reactions, which leads to better self-management, and improvement of interpersonal interaction. For example, meditation can help to keep control over anxiety, and stress, which in turn can enhance moment-by-moment awareness, and can allow any individual to understand their emotional status, and responses, by reducing reactive behavioural approaches or tendencies. This session also includes the benefits of lifelong personal development. From the week 5 module, I came to realise that self-awareness and personal development can improve an individual's ability to understand oneself, and skills related to taking responsibility for learning and making independent, and effective self-directed learning decisions (Stoliarchuk et al., 2024). To summarise, it can be stated that the Week 4 module emphasized the interconnected ideas of personal growth, self-consciousness, and personal development planning (PDP). By comprehending and implementing these concepts, individuals can augment their ability for development, make well-informed choices, and accomplish their objectives.

IV. Active experimentation

Personal development concepts have significantly influenced my approach in both personal and professional situations. For example, I tried to apply self-awareness techniques such are journaling, and meditation to better understand my emotional and behavioural aspects about others and better my interaction skills with others. The concept that I have gained through the week 4, 5 and 6 learning sessions has helped me to recognize my strengths, and areas for improvement, which foster me to develop a more positive self-image and enhance my confidence when I am working within a team or as a team member. Additionally, I have utilized personal development planning to set clear, achievable, and rational goals for my career progression. It helped me to stay motivated and focused on my target and enhance my professional endeavours. I have used the structured approach of PDP to enhance my communication skills through targeted workshops, and my professional skills by learning a code of practices and conducts which are essential in any professional field.

2. Relationship with yourself

The Week 4 module on personal development has significantly deepened my understanding of self-awareness, whereas the Week 6 learning module has helped me to develop my EI or emotional intelligence. These learning sessions have also helped me to know how to facilitate personal and professional growth when it comes to achieving the targeted objectives. From Weeks 4, 5, and 6, I have learned that self-awareness is a practice of knowing own feelings, identifying own attitudes, values, and behavioural patterns and understanding that how it can impact on others (De Vos et al., 2024). Considering the knowledge that I have learned in the week 4 learning module, I came to realise that, to ensure growth in both professional and personal livelihood, one must focus on developing emotional intelligence. From the week 6 learning session, I came to realise that EI or emotional intelligence encompasses the ability to perceive, to take control and evaluate own emotions about others (Mayer et al., 2024). One of the key concepts that I have learned from this module was the importance of self-awareness in recognising how my emotions can influence my interaction with others. For example, during the group project in my healthcare-related coursework, I noticed that my initial cause of frustration for my team members was the lack of communication and sharing of information which affected my thought process. By applying self-awareness techniques like keeping a reflective journal, I was able to identify my emotional trigger and how it can impact team dynamics. This realization led me to adopt a more constructive approach. Instead of expressing my frustration, I tried to initiate conversation with my teammates to understand their point-of-view. This demonstrated emotional intelligence by practising empathy and active listening skills- this not only helped me to improve my working relationship with others but also facilitated me to concentrate on maintaining a collaborative environment within the team and accomplish the task within the deadline (Kohn, 2024).

Moreover, I tried to implement PDP or personal development planning in my strategy, by setting up clear, time-bound, achievable, and relevant goals related to my emotional intelligence, and the development of analytical and communication skills, I can track my progress and remain motivated. This structural approach has also reinforced my commitment to maintaining continuous improvement in educational growth, ensuring that I not only enhance my skills but also I am helping myself develop a career in field a like healthcare setup (Farrell and Ashcraft, 2024). Overall these experiences have underscored the value of personal development by developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, which helped me to prepare myself for starting a career in any industry like the healthcare profession.

3. Relationship with others

Applying the concepts of personal development, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence in group work, I have improved my relationship with others in the team. Let's consider a case study. During the module coursework, we were asked to do a group project, where I encountered conflict, dissatisfaction and disagreement with my team members, who lacked of the skill of sharing information, maintaining a collaborative approach, and consistently missing deadlines. Drawing from the learning on self-awareness, I recognised that my initial response in such a scenario was irritation, and disagreement, which I realised as counterproductive. Therefore, instead of allowing my emotions to direct my action, I took a step back to reflect on the situation considering how my reaction could impact on group dynamics. In such a scenario, I focused on group discussion, where I used my communication as well as listening skills. I discussed clearly with my teammates about the lack of information and missed deadlines. By practicing the active listening skill, I aimed to understand everyone's point-of-view which not only helped me to identify the actual challenges but also helped me to stay committed towards my duty which was to find out the best possible solution to accomplish the project work on time. I also learned about the importance of maintaining empathy in group work from this situation, I learned to empathise with everyone's point of view, and this understanding fostered a supportive environment within the team, and allowed us to work as a team and increase the productivity of the team (Stoliarchuk et al., 2024). Lastly, the skill that I have used in this situation was my conflict resolution skill. Instead of confronting the issue aggressively, I realised that open discussion with every member of the team can be effective in brainstorming ideas and this resolution was effective in strengthening team bond and increasing productivity of every team member. This overall scenario or case study has helped me to bring significant cages in the behavioural approach. I tried to focus on carrying out clear and constructive communication, where my target was to interact based on everyone's feedback and find out the best-fit solution for any conflicts (Aprilia et al., 2024). This shift has helped me to reduce my defensive attitude and helped me to be open with my team members. I also initiated regular monitoring of the progress with the group as it allowed me to address the potential issues as early as possible and proceed with the task with the best possible solution, this proactive approach minimized the misunderstanding and kept everyone within the team accountable.

As a whole, through this experience, I have learned that personal development is not just to focus on individualist growth, rather it is all about strengthening relationships with others and strengthening own skills and competencies based on the situation. By applying the knowledge of self-awareness and emotional intelligence, I transformed the negative situation into an opportunity one with the collaborate with my teammates. This specific approach has helped me in improving my relationship within the group and also equipped me with abilities that can be considered to be invaluable for starting a career specifically in the health and social working field.

4. SMART Development plan

Based on the concept that I have learned from the week 4 learning session, the task that I have carried out on self-awareness development, and the case study on a group project, my personal development objective will be focused on enhancing my communication skills to ensure growth in my professional career.

In PDP, the primary objectives will be:

  • Improve my communication skills- enhance my ability to interact and share information with others with precision in both verbal and written format.
  • Develop emotional intelligence- increase my capacity to understand, and manage my emotions towards others and develop better relationships.
  • Develop time management skills- improve my ability to prioritise tasks, follow work breakdown structure, and accomplish tasks within the stipulated time without compromising with the outcome or quality (Madaminjonovna and Bahiru, 2024).

Discussion on one objective: Improve my communication skills:

To achieve this objective, I set up a specific timeline, and action plan through which I can develop my communication skills, such as participation in group discussions, and seeking feedback from peers and educators. I enrolled in the workshop to learn about different and effective communication techniques which can help me to develop practice as well as theoretical knowledge and experiences to improve both written, and verbal communication skills. To monitor my progress, I have used reflective journals where I will try to document each action that I have followed to develop my communication skills and experiences what went well and areas of improvement. Additionally, I ask for feedback from my peers, and educators after the presentation of the group discussion regarding my improvement in communication skills.

5. Conclusion

To conclude this reflective report, it can be stated that, here I have focused on the Week 4 learning session, where I have learned about personal development, self-awareness, and the importance of a personal development plan. The week 4 learning session has helped me to know about self-awareness and emotional intelligence and fostered the development of valuable insight into my strengths, weaknesses and behavioural patterns. These as a whole have helped me to make informed decisions for implementing positive changes in my personal and professional development approach. During the Week 4 and Week 5 learning sessions, I got scope to apply techniques like effective journaling, setting up SMART goals through PDP, and how to write reflective assessments, which equipped me with a structural framework for continuous improvement. For example, by establishing a clear objective for improving my communication skills, I have actively taken part in group discussions, sought feedback and enrolled in workshops. These approaches have not only improved my ability to convey information but also fostered a strong and collaborative relationship with my peers. As a whole, through the week 4 learning session, I have developed my ideas and knowledge about personal development, why it is important to develop a career, why self-awareness is important and how to develop a PDP or personal development plan.
