Nursing may be presented as a healthcare profession that contains the art and science of caring and emphasises offering effective care services. The current study will reflect on a topic shortage of health workers in non-profit organisations for end-of-life care. It is identified that within Hong Kong, there are several non-profit organisations for cancer patients. The organisation provides effective care services to the patient (Adeani, Febriani and Syafryadin, 2020). Operating as well as managing non-profit organisations is quite difficult due to the significant shortage of health workers. In the context of Hong Kong, there is a significant shortfall of healthcare workers as the sector witnessed a shortfall of over 8000 nurses (Nursing shortage, 2025). One of the main reasons behind the shortage is a stressful working environment, chronic underinvestment in the education of health workers, as well as deskilled work.
Further, within non-profit organisations the reason of shortage of worker is lack of open and transparent communication channels, long working hours, heavy workloads, lack of recognition, and so more. In addition to this, within non-profit organisations, there is a lack of focus given on providing training to the healthcare workers. In addition, when nursing staff face lack of appreciation for their work, lack of opportunity for growth and development than it leads to de-motivate workforce, ultimately results in voluntary turnover leads to shortage of health worker. Consequently, there is a gap between the skills required and what workers have. This leads to making it difficult to develop an effective workforce of healthcare workers, ultimately result into a shortage. Also, the long working hours disrupt the social routine of health workers, resulting in greater mental stress and burnout. Ultimately, within the sector, there is a high turnover rate, leading to a shortage of health workers. In context to this, I assessed that it becomes difficult to build a positive and hygiene environment for the patient’s better recovery. Moreover, positive environment has positive relationship with the patient’s rapid recovery. Referring to Florence Nightingale`s environmental theory, the nurses can support the patient`s recovery and healing process by creating a positive as well as healthy environment.
