The importance of ethics

Ethics for the fundamentals of how a society should or should not behave and how it makes decisions. They offer direction and apply ethics towards the building of healthy relationships in people’s as well as business lives. In general, ethics acts as a regulator of accepted behaviour in society, while it advises people on how to behave adequately and respect other’s rights. I thank my parents for laying these simple but strong pillars opening the door of respect, kindness, and accountability. The rest of the cultural and societal values and standards influenced my ethical perspective. Throughout my education and professional path, Ethics has been best described as being responsible and thinking about the benefits to everyone else (Anderson & Thompson, 2021).

Choose the ethical theory that you connect with the most

The ethical theory I have more affinity with is Virtue Theory. This approach makes sense to me because it goes a long way in cultivating moral rapport in students rather than teaching them to reason based on rules or results as taken by deontology and utilitarianism respectively. Virtue Ethics allows people to develop such aspects as honesty, courage, compassion, and wisdom, which is in line with my understanding of the concept of ethics as the process that makes one become a better person in society. There would be my interest in this theory based on the fact that moral development is of interest to human beings and that ethical action is inherent in virtue. While, for example, deontology and consequentialism grant primary importance to rules, or the assessment of the likely outcomes of certain actions, respectively, Virtue Ethics has more potential for integrating different aspects of ethical decision-making. Maturity fosters reflection on the individual and personal development and ethical consistency between norms and behaviour. I want to view empathy and integrity as values that I apply in my everyday life (Baker & Williams, 2020).

Demonstrating Virtue Ethics in Collaborative Challenges

An example of applying the Virtue Ethics principles was during a group project at the university. Recently one of the team members failed in performing assigned tasks because of his problems and this can lead to the failure or delay of the work completion. I did not scold them, but instead explained and guided them towards the correct goal, or redirected them where necessary to help reduce procrastination and improve their performance. This decision incorporated values such as benevolence and teamwork, which are characteristics I always aim to achieve. Due to the proper prioritize towards morality rather than Materialism as the outcome of the action, I was able to cultivate the right relationship with the people so that a project, that was assigned, could come to a successful completion as well as establish the right and good relations with the people (Bennett & Hughes, 2022).
