Introduction: Essential Research, Note-Taking, and Time Management Skills for Students
Academic skills are characteristics and strategies that aid an individual in becoming a better student. This helps a person in preparing for a career and keeps the person motivated. The academic skills enhance confidence and competence as this increases the ability to keep and recall the information (Bedford and Wilson, 2020). To become successful in a Business and Tourism Management degree, the academic skills required are effective written skills, research, critical thinking and problem-solving. This skill aids me in succeeding in completing my degree as it helps me in focusing better on studies and attaining higher marks, leading to achieving career growth. It is very important for me to have good research skills, note-taking skills, and time management skills.
Developing Research, Note-Taking, and Time Management Skills
With the help of the module, I developed my research skills. The research skill is the skill of searching and evaluating the information that is related to a specific topic. This skill allows me to search for the right information and use it in an effective manner. It helps me to collect the facts and to access the conclusion so that I am able to give the answers to the given questions. The research skill assists me in preparing my academic project for my Business and Tourism Management degree in an appropriate manner (McNaughton, Ball, and Crawford, 2020). With this skill I am able to search for material or information from different sources or websites. This skill aids me in finding accurate and right information that makes my project more informative and educative and better than the other students. This skill enables me to think in an innovative way and enhance my abilities to generate better ideas. While using this skill, I feel very informative as I am aware of the various facts. Sometimes, I feel it is difficult to do research as some websites are paid and need a subscription to get access (Angeli and Giannakos, 2020). But with a good research skill, I was able to find the information from other websites that is essential for preparing my project of Business and Tourism Management.
Developing my research skill stimulates and fosters my personal growth as well as professional growth. It assists in generating a curiosity in me to find related information that makes me a knowledgeable person. It makes me intellectually independent, meaning now I am able to find solutions to problems without any guidance. This develops a learning mindset in me. To further develop my research skills, I look for getting feedback from a mentor. The feedback aids me in identifying my areas of improvement. To further develop the research skill, I pay more attention to the information and use various research techniques (Castillo-Martínez and Ramírez-Montoya, 2021). This skill aids me in the future to convey the idea, opinion and findings to different people.
Another skill that I developed in the module is note-taking. The note-taking skill is a practice of writing down the information taken from the other source. It is not only meant to note the information; it is meant to remember information to increase knowledge so that it is beneficial in the near future. To complete my assignment for the Business and Tourism Management degree, the note-taking skill is very helpful. With the help of this skill I search for all required information and note it in a systematic manner. It helps me in noting down all important topics and important points in an arranged manner. When I start preparing the assignment, I include all noted topics in it; it makes my project more informative (Nelson, 2020). Also, due to this skill, I am not forgetting to add any important information. During the use of the note-taking skill, I find that it enhances my remembering power and I am getting aware of actual facts, which are very important for student life.
This skill makes a positive impact on me and it is helpful for me in getting academic success. It enhances my information-retaining power; this makes me feel knowledgeable and informative; this assists me in qualifying for my exam with good marks. The note-taking skill assists me in acquiring complex concepts easily; this makes me able to excel in my examination. I feel some problems in making notes, as sometimes it is difficult to record information in an accurate manner. To improve my note-taking skill, I need to watch some online videos for preparing good notes (Wahyuni, Utami and Education, 2021). Also for note-taking, I need to make headings of main ideas and concepts, make points, underline the key words, and give numbers to remain organised. This skill will be helpful in future studies, as with the organised information and highlighted points, there is no need to give more time than required.
I developed my time management skill with the help of the module. The time management skill refers to planning and organising the tasks and activities in an efficient manner so that you are able to complete the task and project on time (Zimmerman, Greenberg and Weinstein, 2023). Time management enables working in a smarter way rather than harder; this leads to completing the project on time and reducing stress. The time management skill aids me in planning in advance and making priorities to complete the task on time. This skill helps me to remain organised and avoid any delay in the completion of the project. It is a useful skill to manage the hectic or buzzing schedule. During the term I make a schedule in which I divide the subject of the business and tourism degree and allot different times, like one hour, to each subject. This helps me in giving attention to each subject so that I am not going to lag behind in any one. With the help of time management skills, I am able to focus on study as well as able to take out time for extra activities like playing, reading books and so much more.
As I develop this skill, it positively influences my academic success. Now, I am well-prepared, organized and effectively manage my time and this leads to finishing my assignments on time. I find that I need to grow my time management skills more, as there is some issue in managing my time. So, to develop this skill more, I need to set a timeline, make a schedule, and break the big task into smaller ones. With the help of new ways of managing time and by practicing this, I am able to manage my work on time (Jylänki et al., 2022). This will help me in completing my syllabus according to the time schedule so I am able to retain and recall all required information and knowledge. This will assist in making me a successful person in my professional career. As by properly managing my time, it assists me in concentrating on my studies without any distractions and completing the complex task in less time (Wolters and Brady, 2021). The to-do list and effective time management decline tension as well as pressure in mind so that you can effectively pay attention to studies.
Conclusion
As expressed, the academic skill is helpful in becoming successful in the career. My academic skills mainly research skills, note-taking skill and time management skills, contribute to my succeeding in taking a Business and Tourism Management degree. The research skill is important to search for required and accurate information that makes me knowledgeable. Further, the note-taking skill helped me in remembering important information and the time management skill assists me in planning my whole study schedule in an appropriate manner. Thus, the three academic skills of mine help me in successfully completing a business and tourism management degree. It helps me remain emphasised and motivated, gives me new ways of thinking, leads to growing my career and contributes to completing my degree.
