Skills Developed/Enhanced
Leadership and Team Management: Being a housekeeping team leader, especially in Lady Margaret Hall it involved the assignment of duties to the staff through the development of rotas, room inspections and order of stores. This position was informative in enabling me to foster delegation since other team members had to complete their assigned tasks on time. Working with a team helped me learn lessons in communication, conflict solving, and motivation of people to give their best.
Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: In embracing these two different business areas, there were bound to be some surprises and this was the case most of the times (Buehring and Bishop, 2020). I always got the importance of being able to deal with conflicts and work through efficient solutions by myself, whether that was a timetable clash with a course or a complaint from an employee.
Customer Service and Communication: Cooperating with the Coordinate department and HR, I developed my skills in customer relations in both intra- and extra organizational levels. I received different requests from the staff and at times was the initial person who dealt with complaints. For communication, Ndlangamandla, my time at Nando’s Restaurant also improved how I undertake customer-facing communication which helps in HR when dealing with employees/management.
New Knowledge
The management of Human Resources and skills development, including staff engagement and wellbeing, was one crucial and efficient area of new learning. As a short stint in the Human Resource Department of Lady Margaret Hall, I came to understand the need to Erik and the morale of the workers as well as the need to ensure that the workers’ needs were met as needed. I also learned how best to handle staff issues and issues to do with staff performance and how to write proper reports of staff incidences that may happen within organizations. Furthermore, my interaction with the different operations environments of hospitality has given me perspective on how various departments in an organization have to interconnect. This idea has been helpful as it gives a perspective on how HR can further organisational objectives.
Confidence Growth
Leadership responsibilities as a housekeeping team leader have helped me gain a lot of confidence which I owe to. In the beginning, I struggled a great deal to be in charge of a large group of people and the most crucial aspect, whenever there were some problematic issues or a lack of workers, for example, repellents are troublesome for disciplining subordinates. However, as the days passed by, I gained more confidence on how to assert my authority as a leader, and at the same time make everyone feel comfortable to work under my leadership.
In addition, this gave me the confidence to take up client-facing roles to make decisions and communicate these to the team. This enhanced confidence has motivated my leadership ability, especially in areas such as making quicker decisions on my own without consulting others once the need arises.
Application in Future Career
I have learned many skills in these positions, especially the ability to manage people, and problem-solving skills, as well as my knowledge in Human Resources, which I will be using in my future career. Due to good management and motivational skills as well as good organizational skills I can be promoted to more corporate HR positions where calls for senior management of employees' productivity and streamlined processes are common. I also would try to expand my knowledge of employment law and HR strategy after gaining an understanding of HR processes in the company, in order to achieve my long-term goal of career in Human Resources (Stofkova and Sukalova, 2020). Due to my past management experiences when I was handling employees and handling issues on my own, I can easily handle operational management tasks as well as taking care of people.
Task 2: Identify Skills Gaps and Action Plan
Superior level of human resource knowledge and employment law
Even though I have previous experience in different HR positions I may lack a detailed understanding of employment law, rights of the employees and more sophisticated knowledge of working in the HR field. This I have found to be essential to enable me to address more complexities within the Human Resource field as well as transform to other senior HR positions.
Data Analysis and HR Software Competency
With the changes in recent years, where valuable skills are required to analyze the data of the employees or measure their performance and competence, or the usage of HR software and tools (like the HRIS), the work of the HR professionals is definitely more data-driven. At the present time, my technical skills in their application are still rather weak, and thus, acquiring those skills will enable better management of the HR operations.
Public Speaking and Presentation Skills
Although I have enhanced my training in team dynamics and conflict-solving, I understand that my interpersonal communication, specifically my presentation skills, could be improved. This is more relevant to HR positions that entail facilitating training sessions, workshops or presenting reports to top management.
