Developing values and principles in the health and social care setup and practices is considered to be important for delivering high-quality healthcare services and meeting the needs of patients. In this essay, an in-depth analysis of Hassan, a 48-year-old man who resided in a deprived area of Bradford with his wife Salima and four children, has been carried out. According to the case scenario, the complex health and social care needs of Hassan include the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and obesity which has created a challenging situation for the professionals as he has the need for high-quality, compassionate, and safe healthcare service facilities. By considering the case scenario, it can be stated that in the health and social care setup, professionalism is important as it underpins the delivery of person-centred, and effective care by a healthcare professional to the patient. The primary rationale for professionalism is to develop a collaborative working approach in a healthcare setup and promote patient safety as a team work with other colleagues and patients (Teisberg et al. 2020). This essay will analyse the case study by applying fundamental principles and values in health and social care, by emphasising 6C's principles (Care, Compassion, Communication, Courage, Commitment, and Competencies), accountability, code of conduct, and ethical principles. The Section of this essay will include Effective Communication as the chosen Care certificate standard in relevance to support the healthcare needs of Hassan.

Professionalism is considered as fundamental in health and social care set up in reference to setting up values and principles that can guide a healthcare professional to interact with colleagues, other professionals, and service users or patients. According to Teisberg et al. (2019), the primary rationale of professionalism in healthcare practice is to promote collaboration or partnership and promote patient safety. (2023) the healthcare and support used to be delivered by a team of healthcare workers and professionals who need to interact well, and respect the code of practices, rights of patients, and confidentiality. On the other hand, accountability is another important value and principle in this respective sector as it defines that every healthcare professional should be accountable for taking responsibility for their own action and decisions and build trust and reliability (NHS 2015). Additionally, in the health and social care setup, one of the important principles and values of healthcare workers is to respect and maintain dignity for the patient for whom the service has to be provided.

Additionally, health and social care professionals should embrace the fundamental value to ensure the delivery of patient-centered care. Tailoring person-centered care to the patient, it should be important to determine whether the needs preferences, and cultural beliefs are being maintained and respected at the healthcare setup or not (Kelly et al. 2015). Person-centered care emphasises communication, shared decision-making, empathy promotion of collaborative working approaches. With this approach healthcare professionals should ensure professionalism by respecting every patient as a unique individual, empowering them with a care journey, and acknowledging the diversity at the workplace setup.

6C's are the set of core values that set up guiding principles for health and social care professionals. 6C's demarcates care, compassion, competencies, communication, commitment, and courage, by following and practicing which a healthcare professional can ensure their ability to deliver the highest quality of care by following strategies used by the NHS (Oxborough, 2021).

In the case of Hassan, the principles, and values have become important due to his complex healthcare needs. As a social prescribing link worker, it should be important to adopt several roles and responsibilities to address the holistic care needs and well-being of Hassa. Being accountable can involve me as a social prescribing link worker to actively support Hassa in managing his diabetes, and make him well-understand about the medication regime.

Considering the 6C's approach, it can guide social prescribing link workers to continue a transparent and clear interaction with Hassan and his family through compassion (Hill & Fox, 2022). On the other hand, effective communication, competence, and courage will help to address the challenges and be committed to ensuring well-being to Hassan during the care practices.

Considering the case scenario of Hassan, it should be important to respect his autonomy, maintain confidentiality, and respect his cultural beliefs while offering care support to him at the health and social care setup. As a Social Prescribing Link worker, it should be, important to prioritise the well-being of Hassan by ensuring his consent and involving him in the decision taken for his health by the professionals.

According to the case scenario, Hassan is a 48-year-old man who lives with his wife and four children. Hassan has complex health and social care needs to manage and monitor his diabetes, high blood glucose level, diet practices, and fat and carbohydrate level. On the other hand, Salima was sectioned under the MHA as she had spent six months at the local psychiatric unit which limited her bonding with Nadir. According to the case scenario, due to the ill health of Salima, Hasan has to do the majority of the household work for his family. According to Hasan, he has tried to lose weight, stop smoking, and take up physical activities but he failed to change his lifestyle due to the excessive burden of personal livelihoods. Considering the overall case scenario of Hasan, Effective Communication will be the best possible standard to navigate the challenges of service users such as managing obesity and type 2 Diabetes and supporting his wife Salima who has mental health issues.

(2015), effective communication is important to build a therapeutic relationship between Hasan and determine the intricate network of health and social issues that Hasan and his family are dealing with. With Effective communication “I” as a social prescribing link worker can understand his Islamic faith and family dynamic which in turn can help to design treatment strategies accordingly, clear and culturally ethical communication can help Hasan to comprehend his diabetic management lifestyle changes and smoking cessation practices in align with Islamic principles (Amin, Abdelmageed & Farhat, 2021). On the other hand, challenging work schedules and financial struggles have had a negative impact on the ability to make changes in diet and lifestyle, Effective communication can help healthcare professionals develop a realistic solution by understanding the constraints of Hasan and collaborating those strategies with cultural and social aspects.

Application

As a social prescribing link worker, it can be essential to use culturally ethical languages, visual aids, and information in line with Islamic principles when it comes to designing a diet chart for Hasan. For example, discussion about the dietary changes during Ramadan needs clear communication, specifically when it comes to managing blood glucose level, fat, and carbohydrate levels for Hasan at the time of religious fasting practice (Amin & Abdelmageed, 2020). As per the case scenario, Hasan uses vape during working hours. Through effective communication, alternative coping mechanisms and practices can be explored by emphasising the compatibility of quitting the smoking habit in line with Islamic belief on health prevention. Empathetic conversation regularly can be included in the treatment plan of Hasan which in turn can help him lower his stress level and feel supported (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). According to Hasan, Mosque is his community hub, therefore incorporating his community and family into a discussion regarding the treatment plan needs clear communication. By tailoring the communication with cultural and religious context, it can be possible to empower Hasan to actively engage with a treatment plan and access person-centered care from healthcare professionals.

Dignity as values and principles in healthcare setup refers to that individual like Hasam should be treated with importance, and their cultural belief will always be acknowledged. In this essay, Effective communication has been selected as a standard through which healthcare professionals can provide a clear understanding of medicine; regime, needs for lifestyle changes, and the importance of adopting physical activities to manage diabetes and obesity. For the case scenario of Hasan, respecting the Islamic faith and belief, ensuring culturally ethical interaction, and upholding the dignity of the patient are important to develop healthcare strategies by following which Hasan can overcome high blood sugar, high fat, and carbohydrate levels. The application of effective communication as a principle and value in health and social care setup can create a person-centered, and collaborative approach by aligning with the beliefs and needs of Hasan, which ultimately can contribute to the overall health and well-being of the patient.
