Many organizations needed to adapt ads to make technology a part of their day-to-day operations. However, with COVID19, this adjustment was implemented faster than in everyday situations. People who did not integrate technology into their day-to-day operations in new ways (for example, home office technology) may have been forced to adapt more quickly during the pandemic.

In many cases, companies respond to crises with short-term adjustments and organizational changes and use these strategies to respond as effectively as possible to environmental changes. This change in an organization often occurs when financial problems are central to survival (Kim et al., 2020). Therefore, businesses and workers strive to be more flexible in dealing with potential future shocks. In the current situation, this flexibility can extend to digital-style work. The Tesco company decided to develop effective rules for their employees. The company permitted the employee to continue their work from home.

During the covid 19 pandemic, working from home is one of the most demanding proposals. However, there must be challenges like communication, handling power to the customer and the various types of customer satisfaction. Tesco is a grocery company, so, during the covid 19 pandemic situation, the demand for these items increased. So, it is very much necessary to supply the food and grocery items according to the customer's demands, but due to the communication gap, sometimes the customers are not satisfied. So, this is one of the biggest problems (Kutnjak et al., 2021). Thus, this study shall help to understand how Tesco changed their working mode and satisfied the product demand during the pandemic.

Increasing telecommuting influences awareness of the importance of income apart from traditional work as a safe source of income.

 According to (Jones et al., 2021), the world is changing. The global COVID 19 pandemic has paralyzed businesses. The endangered economy and lives have ceased and the current crisis is reaching a scale never seen since Great Depression. According to (Nagel et al, 2020), World GDP is projected as follows -6% in single hit scenario. Forecast trends are consistent. It is a disadvantage for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, where a loss of -7.5% is expected in a single-hit scenario. According to (Stoller et al., 2021), if the second wave occurs, it will drop to -9.3% (OECD, 2020). At the same time, statistics are advancing a much more serious employment crisis than the 2008 financial crisis has been witnessed. The unemployment rate in May 2020 OECD countries fell slightly to 8.4th place It reached 8.5% in April 2020. According to (Bennett et al., 2021), this is the highest unemployment rate in 10 years. The economic recovery was initially thought to be V-shaped, but according to the latest reports, the unemployment rate will exceed pre-crisis levels by the end of 2021.

 According to (Ionescu et al., 2021), Digital transformation involves creating new business models and making significant changes to existing business models. Digital transformation does not necessarily mean that companies have to abandon their existing business models. According to (Ardolino et al.,2022), in contrast, digital transformation projects, which consist of new digital or digitally enhanced business models and typically complement existing traditional business models. According to (de Lucas Ancillo et al.,2021), in addition, the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on enterprises has opened up new opportunities for business models by combining digital and traditional business models. For example, before the pandemic, the course was either a traditional face-to-face course or an online course. But today, universities are introducing blended learning courses that combine both traditional classroom learning and e-learning. To meet the challenges of COVID 19, artists are also integrating online live performances with less crowded traditional performances as well as the organizations have changed their workplace and shifted it from “work from office” to “work from home” structure strengthening the communication approaches (Capano et al., 2022).

This process provides researchers with a large amount of relevant data on their research topics. This study carries out the entire study by a quantitative method using an inductive approach. In interpretive research philosophy, researchers acquire knowledge from practical evidence. Research design is responsible for helping researchers to choose between primary and secondary research processes and to produce research results. According to previous information, researchers used the secondary research design to research to analyze the impact of the global pandemic on accelerating workplace transformation (de Lucas Ancillo et al., 2021).

Data Collection Method

Data acquisition has emerged as an important process in measuring and collecting information about changing interests. This is an established systematic development that allows the researcher to answer research questions and evaluate the results. The global covid 19 pandemic was created due to the spreading of the coronavirus. It affects the health of humans all over the world. As well it makes a significant impact on workplaces. Around the world, people seek to save lives by slowing down due to the spread of the coronavirus. The global pandemic has changed the concept of work and workplaces (Byrne et al., 2021). Before the pandemic, employees of any organization are doing their work from their office workspace with flexibility and have a mental health focus. However, the pandemic situation changed the whole thing. At the beginning of the pandemic, many employees complained about the work from the home system because this work process affects their work-life and personal life balance. However, after a few times, the working space changes into the work from the home process and people understand its flexibility and advantage. There is also such a rapid downfall seen in the decrease of employment. Over 7.6 million jobs were at risk during the lockdown time in the United Kingdom, such as in the retail company Tesco.

Problem Statement

The covid 19 pandemic also created lockdown norms, resulting in the shutting down of businesses and offices. However, in such situation the demand of products (such as the products of Tesco) did not decline and that situation demanded the employees to work from their homes. Tesco is one of the retail market leaders of groceries in the United Kingdom. It was founded in the year of 1919 by Jack Cohen (Feyisa et al., 2020). The pandemic situation is like a challenge for them. Alan Stewart, the chief financial officer of Tesco PLC also said that their business system probably changed in a few months more than their last 10 years of business experience because of the rapid outbreak of coronavirus. This pressure fell out across all of their employees. But the employees had responded so quickly to maintain their customer preference first. At the peak situation of covid 19, pandemic Tesco PLC recruited almost 50,000 new employees as temporary staff to support its workplace, which was already in the initial stage (Siche et al., 2020). In the year 2020 August, they transferred their supermarket business chain to online procedure because they saw a huge sales increase and changes in online sales as a result of the coronavirus pandemic situation. Overall grocery sales are increasing very strongly as the employees are moving towards their work. Tesco PLC also offers placements and internship schemes to 1,000 young people in their offices and stores.

The covid 19 pandemic also disrupted the labour markets globally in 2020 (Bell et al., 2020). Millions of people lost their jobs, and other people rapidly adjusted their workplace to their home as all the office was closed. However, many essential workers, such as staff of the hospital sector, grocery are doing their work from their workplace under the new protocols. The pandemic situation pushed up the companies and their employees to adopt new behaviours in this situation, such as virtual meetings. Video conference during the pandemic is one of the tremendous new acceptances for companies. The retail industries are shifting to the digital way, and digital transactions have increased their sales growth which is beneficial for them (Ahuja et al., 2021).

Researchers also use various types of research approaches, but two types of research approaches are involved: the deductive approach and the inductive approach. It was noted that the inductive approach also evolved with the advent of new theories that succeeded in analyzing the theory. The deductive approach is also known as a test of existing theory. In addition, the deductive approach is also based on quantitative data, and the inductive approach is also based on qualitative data. In this study, an inductive approach was chosen to analyze different factors of the impact of the global pandemic on accelerating workplace transformation(Bennett et al.,2021).


The research approach, developed as a plan for developing procedures, consists of various assumptions that evolve into detailed methods of data acquisition, interpretation, and analysis. In addition, the research approach is a procedure that has been effectively developed through a deductive and inductive approach(Su et al.,2022). The deductive approach also consists of building hypotheses based on existing theories and designing the best research strategies. The inductive research approach, on the other hand, involves empirical observations to theorize patterns (Baylis et al., 2020). Likewise, this study is based on an inductive approach and that shall help to reflect a general theory regarding workplace transformation, and the research questions can be answered.

Research Strategy

Developing a suitable research strategy is a step-by-step approach that requires coming up with different types of action plans to identify the highest quality data. Research strategies can also systematically engage in research to identify the highest quality results. Researchers can use their research strategies to help them choose the proper data acquisition method. It has been developed using an essential part of the strategic implementation of the study (Ionescu et al., 2021). One of the best plans is to develop quality research. This research strategy can guide the researchers in conducting, planning, and monitoring the entire study. This research method includes the strategy of case study analysis and performing a systematic literature review.


In this research strategy, the primary purpose of qualitative methods is to understand different types of beliefs, personal experiences, attitudes and behaviours, and the quality and methods of interaction. Generating non-numeric data is also very important. Integrating case study analysis and systematic literature reviews is the type of research strategy that is gaining increasing attention from an interdisciplinary perspective (Amankwah-Amoah et al., 2021). In addition, the researchers pooled and collected existing data to increase the effectiveness of the study (Soto-Acosta et al.,2020).

Research Design

Research design evolves as an overall strategy used in various studies to select the best integration of studies logically. Researchers have developed various practical solutions for investigating problems that measure, collect, and analyze all data. The research design is also essential to enable researchers to make better decisions at every research stage. The study design also analyses primary forms of research perspective developed through quantitative and qualitative- descriptive research. In this research, qualitative research design aims to develop a critical understanding of descriptive data.


In each research project, researchers need to systematically consider descriptive study designs to obtain different types of information. More specifically, descriptive study design involves identifying specific data to obtain different types of conditions. Likewise, such a design shall help to understand workplace transformation accurately. The descriptive study design involves identifying the qualitative data for this study proposal (Gabryelczyk et al.,2020).

Since the initiation of the pandemic situation, they have focused on ensuring that everyone can get their food in a safe environment. Ting et al., (2021) said that they hired a lot of temporary employees when the demand of the food was highest to run their business in the crucial time of the Pandemic situation to make their workplace more sustainable. They also changed their stores' opening hours and applied the online food delivery process, increasing their sales growth most during the pandemic. They initiated a "work from home" structure to continue the supply of goods.

These unpredictable challenges are having the economic crisis across the country United Kingdom. The rise and advancement of digital technology are to eliminate, or at least reduce, business silos at best while enabling real-time collaboration, working from home and knowledge sharing between internal and external innovation teams. Digitalization offers companies many opportunities to create value by transforming their internal operations and integrating with suppliers, customers and business partners for real-time information sharing and collaboration.


The research proposal is based on some philosophy and strategy that explains the efforts and exploration about changes in workplaces during the time of covid 19 pandemic comparing between before and after covid pandemic situation (Moore et al., 20). The strategy which is used to compare these two situations is perfect for the research. It gives a brief analysis to understand the research proposal. The methodology in this research is to draw on existing knowledge to make the research paper more sustainable. Moreover the strategy and the philosophy are perfectly fit to analyze the research proposal. However, it is recommended that organizations like Tesco shall offer “work from home” system after the pandemic also due to its benefits. It shall help the employees to save their time and travel cost. It shall also be a flexible Working option. However, the organizations shall give appropriate training to the employees to continue distant working effectively.


The study has been based on secondary method and has gathered various data from already published articles. The method has given the wide range of information and has also helped to understand the views of different authors regarding the workplace transformation. Thus, an in-depth understanding of the impact of a pandemic on accelerating workplace transformation in Tesco has been understood.

However, gathering primary data and interviewing the employees of Tesco, those who have faced the work place transformation and is working from home rather than working from office, could have reflected more accurate understanding of the workplace transformation

The covid 19 pandemic situation affects the workplace majorly and decreases the development of businesses. Growth is the main purpose of every business. After the post-pandemic situation digital transformation is the one and only way to improve the growth and success of work and workplaces. The technology helps to expedite the various working processes and manage remote workers who are doing their job from their destination. For that reason technology development helps the workers digitally. Digital technology and digital strategy make a sustainable business method for the development and success. Just because the covid 19 pandemic situations creates a lot of disadvantages for employees and their workplaces, only the technologies can improve the workplaces after the post covid situation because technology has made data analysis and storage easier. Moreover, the companies are taking their benefits to develop the digital strategy in the near future because technical strategies achieve many positive things and create awareness for their products and services, which is one of the great, effective and efficient ways to develop and grow in businesses. The companies who are adapting this remote working process also need to develop technological things to develop their business because the digital transformation creates a competitive advantage for their business management. Implementing the digital business strategies also accelerate the product development, creating and discovering new channels, increasing the market share etc.
