Human Resource Management is the activity of recruiting the best candidate and employing, managing the employees of the organisation to achieve organisational goals. The report will be based on the implication of the talent management of the Morrison Company. The Wm Morrison Supermarket is located in the United Kingdom, it is the 5th largest retail company. The headquartered of the company is in Bradford, England. The retail company operated 497 supermarkets in England, Wales, Scotland and Gibraltar. The Morrison is the 2nd biggest fresh food manufacturer in the UK, offering fresh breads, meat products and seafood, beverages, groceries, drinks, household products, merchandise and so more. The company caters for services online and through its convenience stores for better satisfaction of their customers. The company provides an affordable variety of own-brand products such as “Nutmeg” for clothing and “Free From” for diet products.
Talent management refers to an activity in which employers recruit employees and develop a productive workforce that remains with the company for the long term. Talent management aids the company to be competitive and contributes to improved business performance. The report will address the issues faced by the Morrison Company in talent management such as recruiting candidates, shortage of skilled workers, employee turnover, employee safety, workforce planning during seasonal times and so more. The report will cover some source such as internal overview, research and survey to identify the issue and challenges face by Morrison. It will also highlight some key findings and recommendations to solve these issues.
Key issues faced by Morrison in talent management
Some of key issues faced by Morrison are as follows:
Searching suitable candidates internally- The Morrison is facing issues in searching best and suitable candidate for their supermarket business within the company. The company need to find employees internally to fill the vacancy (Monteiro, 2024). The biggest issue faced by Morrison in talent management is identifying the talent that the company have and training them according to the required vacancy. Shortage of skilled workforce- The retail company often struggles due to the shortage of skilled workforce. The company faces problems when they have a lack of skilled manpower according to the needs and requirements (Kwok, 2022). The inadequate number of skilled people in a company is a hindrance to achieving goals because of this the company is unable to operate its business.
This also affects the productivity and satisfaction of the customers. Employee turnover -The key issue faced by the Morrison Company in talent management is greater employee turnover and retention. It is a destructive factor for the company. Due to high employee turnover, the working of the retail company is highly affected (Hongal and Kinange, 2020). The Morrison Company has to spend large amounts of money to replace them and to hire and training of new employees. The process of hiring to training is very time-consuming and needs lots of effort. Recognise growth potential- It is very difficult for the company to develop or train an employee who is unwilling to develop.
An employee who is willing to develop is beneficial for the company`s success. One of the major issues faced by Morrison is that they are unable to recognize employee’s capability and willingness to change and grow. Constructing Teams- A strong team plays a crucial role in the efficiency and success of the company. There is a problem occurring in front of the company while building a team because the company is not sure about who collaborates and works better together. For the completion of a given task, Morrison needs to combine people with the same strengths to build a good team. A good team helps the company to solve problems, helps the business work efficiently and effectively and also improves the satisfaction of the customers. Employee safety- In today`s time, employee safety is the main concern for the Morison Company.
For the safety of employees and customers, the company researches and executes new safety measures according to the requirements of the company (Johnson, 2020). The measures included cleaning the workplace regularly, installing fire alarms, providing cleaning supplies necessary for working hours, and proper checking of used tools and machines to ensure proper working so the company reduces the chances of any harm. Workforce planning during seasonal demand - Morrison Company faces the biggest challenge in managing the employees effectively at the time of the peak of the season. The company need to manage their employees at the time of the season and appoint the employees in the different departments and stores of different regions. The company need more employees at the peak time to cater for the customers and to run the business efficiently.
Competing for Local Talent- Some candidates are not willing to take retail positions because of this the company is dependent on local talent. For this, the company has to do lots of advertisement to attract the candidates towards the company (Adegoke, 2023). The job seekers have lots of options to do any local job with any company, so it is a challenge for the Morrison Company to take a step which is helpful to pool the most suitable local talent towards the company.

The Morrison Company can address this issue through various sources and it is very essential for the company and its employee to operate its retail business and to maintain its profits and productivity. Some od sources are as follows:

For effective working and to address issue, a complete understanding of a company is important. An internal overview aids a company to emphasises on key area for growth, development and competitive advantage. An internal overview is a process of inspection within a company through this the company know about the circumstances in the company. With the help of internal overview, the Morrison find there is a high employee turnover.
This ensures company to find reason regarding employee turnover and help in find solution for this. It also helps company in identifying the needs of employee during the peak times. Conducting Research- Research is a systematic study to get more facts, figures and data on specific topic for a specific purpose. With effective research the HR is able to recognize, evaluate and find a solution for related problems within or outside a company. With proper research the Morrison get to know about shortage of skilled labour, lack of growth potential (Fildes, Ma and Kolassa, 2022). Through conducting systematic research, the employer gets the information of skilled employees. By doing research company find employees through various job boards, social media, placements in school, colleges and universities. This aids company in recruiting skilled personal and also help to know the problems faced by employee during working hour and help in overcome with these problems.
Performing Surveys- Survey is a systematic method of collecting information by asking questions to the sample of individuals. It helps in understanding various aspect of population. It can be in the form of written and online. By conducting survey within the company, it helps in knowing the employee’s idea, experience, skill, preference and their goals and expectations from the current job (Gallardo-Gallardo, Thunnissen and Scullion, 2020). This help Morrison in building a good team to accomplish its pre- decided goals. It is beneficial because it opens a way for communication with the employees, by feeling questionnaire employee can share their good and bad feedback. In the retail industry, the Morrison Company faces a challenge regarding finding suitable candidates for their retail stores in different regions. The company need qualified and skilled personnel who are qualified, well-communicator, have a sense of responsibility and can work under any circumstances. To find a suitable candidate within the company, the company must be well aware of the skill, knowledge and talent of its employees so that they can recruit the best talent within the company. This saves the company cost, time and money. To recruit a suitable candidate outside the company, Morrison needs to do advertisements through the help of social media, asking existing employees to suggest candidates for a vacant job. In the retail industry, high employee turnover is witnessed, and Morrison also faces the challenge of retaining employees.
In this industry, the employee feels stressed at grocery stores while dealing with customers and also the employees get bored quickly with this kind of job. Sometimes employees feel less motivated as a result they quit their jobs (Damarasri and Ahman, 2020). To deal with this problem the Morrison Company need to increase the morale and confidence of the employees by giving them rewards in the form of monetary and non-monetary. The company should give new opportunities and responsibilities to employees to grow. Due to this the employee feels appreciated and remains with the company for a longer period. At the time of seasonal peak means during festivals and occasions, the Morrison Company required more employees or workers at different departments of different stores. Also, the company caters for their services through online platforms because of this it requires a large amount of workforce to deal with the demand of customers online and to do delivery.
To solve this issue of managing employees the company should first look at the previous sale and according to it estimate the hiring needs. The company should identify the requirement at the right time because competitors also start recruiting people for this purpose. The company faces challenges in recruiting the required skilled candidates in the company. As a solution to this problem, the Morrison Company should start giving training to their current employees, to fill the vacant job position in the company. This aids the company in getting skilled employees without spending a greater amount of money on recruitment (Tamunomiebi and Worgu, 2020). The company should keep an open mind to recruit the right skill set people. The company can recruit a candidate with half the required skills and with the help of appropriate training help them to grow their half skills.
In the retail industry, there is a lot of chaos during occasions and festivals, there are chances of fall incidents, emergency conditions and overcrowding. To overcome this kind of situation Morrison should set safety guidelines for their retail stores (Grytnes et al., 2021). For the safety measure, the company should assemble fire exits, first aid kits, and regular maintenance of machines. This aids employees and customers in hazardous situations. The Morrison faces challenges in recruiting local talent for their retail store because competitors also start recruiting the best talent for their retail stores. For finding and hiring suitable local talent for the company, the company should use its website for posting job vacancies, hosting events for recruitment and attracting competent local talent.
This process helps Morrison to recruit best local talent for their company. The company is incapable to achieve its goal if the employees are not able to work in a team. Inefficiency of employee work in a team is a reason of poor communication, laziness, lack of trust on co-worker (Dorasamy, 2021). For this, Morrison should clear communicate with their employees regarding goals, their roles and responsibility. The company should make possible efforts to build a trust among employees.

To sum of all, it is concluded that talent management is essential for every business. It improves performance of the business by recruiting suitable workforce that help in increasing productivity. The report stated about the talent management of the Morrison Company. The report covered some challenges like employee turnover, shortage of skilled workers, inefficiency in building good team within the company. The report also outlined some sources from where the Morrison identifies these challenges. It highlighted recommendations to solve these challenges such as increasing employee morale, post on various sources to attract talented employees.
